PILATES

Pilates is a form of exercise developed almost 100 years ago by Joseph Pilates, who was born in Germany and died at the age of 87. He was a frail child who suffered with many illnesses. To overcome his fragility he developed an exercise technique to strengthen his own body and then in 1926 on settling in America he opened his first studio working mainly with dancers. The original method evolved as developments were made within the area of scientific research and biomechanics. At Yorkshire Physiotherapy & Wellbeing we teach Modern Pilates, which adheres to Joseph's basic principles of precision, control and centering within a more modern, up to date method designed by physiotherapists and exercise professionals. It focuses on teaching clients to gain a deeper understanding and awareness of their body. Exercises are aimed at developing good posture, and correct breathing in a variety of positions - Standing, All Fours and Mat-based. We focus on building stronger more stable muscles, whilst increasing flexibility, which helps to realign the body with controlled flowing movements that gradually progress in intensity and strength. This is achieved by offering small group classes (4 max) or 1-1 training. The small group set-up ensures clients receive personal feedback and guidance in each session from instructors fully trained in the Modern Pilates method. By attending regular sessions you will learn the basic knowledge to be able to use these methods in everyday life -work, play, sports and social activities.

The Pilates studio runs on a Friday morning, classes are 1 hour long.
